Valerie Vagts - Performance Improvement and Education Coordinator
After graduating from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Valerie worked as an Assistant Manager at Wal-Mart for 5 years followed by 13 years (3 separate positions) at BB&T Bank. A few of the diverse skills Valerie acquired along the way include: teaching credit underwriting throughout BB&T’s footprint, managing/leading teams, navigating mergers and acquisitions, project management, facilitating meetings, process improvement, strategic planning, business process consulting, classroom and curriculum management, performance tracking and evaluation, and implementing new lending systems from designing – training – launching – inspection to remediation.
Valerie moved back to Virginia Beach from Winston-Salem, NC after 8 years at BB&T’s HQ on April Fool’s Day 2019. Since then, Valerie became active in her community by volunteering at the VBSPCA fostering puppies, cleaning kennels, bringing dogs to nursing homes (aka Visiting Paws) and reading at elementary schools with a puppy (aka Listening Ears). In addition, Valerie attended a financial seminar in June, at which the presenter casually mentioned being a volunteer EMT for the City of Virginia Beach. After inquiring more about volunteering, she went on her first observer shift and began the BLS Academy on September 12th. To honor the fallen heroes, each group picked a September 11th hero dog as their group name and hers was a beautiful Golden Retriever named Orion. Realizing she had an aptitude for healthcare, Valerie became a Nationally Registered and State Certified EMT February 11th, graduated from the Academy February 27th, became a released provider April 17th, and performed just shy of 500 hours of service before joining the Tidewater EMS Council on September 16, 2020. Valerie continues to volunteer for the City of Virginia Beach at Rescue 14.
When it comes to a leisure day, you can find Valerie enjoying a roller skate on the boardwalk, attending 5k races, completing home improvement projects, riding a bike, hiking, traveling, spending time with her friends/family (specifically with two amazing nephews) and exploring different types of food at local restaurants.
