Virginia Beach EMS Conducts Awards Program

The Virginia Beach Department of EMS held its annual awards and recognition program on May 18, 2005 at the Corporate Landing Middle School. The evening featured numerous awards for life saving, length of service, education, merit, acts of service, call of the year, educator of the year, EMS provider of the year and other commendations. Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf provided remarks and read a proclamation honoring the life of Edmund A. "Ned" Langhorne who was a long time rescue volunteer, active in numerous organizations and the Virginia Beach General Hospital board and who died in December. Delegate Harry R. Purkey presented a similar resolution adopted by the Virginia General Assembly honoring Mr. Langhorne.  Some 170 rescue, fire, police and communications personnel were recognized as Life Savers for their teamwork in saving the lives of nineteen cardiac arrest and drowning victims during the past year. The combined 10 rescue squads and the city's Department of EMS responded so over 34,000 calls for assistance in 2004.
