New field coordinator position serves Western Tidewater

porter smallThe Tidewater EMS Council created a new field coordinator position to support EMS education, performance improvement, mass casualty preparedness and other EMS programs in the counties of Southampton and Isle of Wight, and the city of Franklin.

Harvey “Jay” Porter, the Tidewater EMS Council’s former Education and Performance Improvement Coordinator, began serving as Field Coordinator – Western Tidewater part time beginning January 1, 2018.

Former Beach EMS Chief receives Governor's Excellence Award

Bruce Edwards Governors Excellence Award 2017Bruce W. Edwards, retired chief of the Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services, received the 2017 Governor's Award for Excellence in EMS, the state's highest EMS honor, on November 11 in Norfolk during the annual Virginia EMS Symposium awards program.

After 49 years of service Bruce W. Edwards retired from the position of EMS Chief in Virginia Beach in 2016. He started as a volunteer with the Ocean Parks Rescue Squad in 1967 and went on to build one of the most innovative and agile Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems in the country.

TEMS welcomes new PI and Education Coordinator

McMahonMichael F. "Mike" McMahon, Jr. joined the Tidewater EMS Council staff on December 8, 2017 as the Performance Improvement and Education Coordinator. Mike is a National Registry Paramedic and Virginia Education Coordinator, and holds a Master's degree in Public Health from the Eastern Virginia Medical School and a Bachelor's of Science degree in biology from Virginia Tech. Mike's EMS background includes volunteer and career EMS, lifeguard service and EMS instruction along with various other fire, hazmat, ICS and medical certifications.

EMS 2050 logoThe first regional meeting for The EMS Agenda 2050 to discuss the Straw Man Document created by a panel of subject matter experts was held on September 26, 2017 in Silver Spring, MD. The EMS Agenda 2050 is very public and intended to be as inclusive as possible; literally anyone can provide comment on the Straw Man Document or the process by e-mailing This email address is being protected from spambots.
